For cruises originating in the United States, the most popular cruise destination is the Caribbean. Cruise lines offer sailings to the Eastern, Western, and Southern Caribbean islands and frequent stops in the Bahamas.
Here are a few popular examples from each region. Specific itineraries will vary by cruise line and sailings.
Eastern – Typically includes visiting the Bahamas and St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, etc.
Western – This itinerary might include Cozumel or Costa Maya, Mexico or Grand Cayman, and Jamaica.
Southern – itineraries may include San Juan, Aruba, Bonaire, or Curacao.
The best time to cruise depends on your preferences and situation. Summer cruises often come with higher prices and more children onboard, while fall cruises might have fewer kids but a greater chance of hurricanes. Your itinerary also plays a role
Alaska cruises typically run from April through September. If you're traveling with kids, you may need to plan around school breaks. Choose a time that works for you and try to book as early as possible to secure the best options.
Most cruise lines offer staggered arrival times, which you typically select during the online check-in process. You can choose an arrival time or have one assigned to you, depending on your travel plans. Opinions vary on the best time to arrive.
Personally, I prefer the earliest arrival time since we always travel to the embarkation port a day in advance. After all, you’ve paid for the first day of your cruise, so why not start early? Others, however, enjoy the later arrival option, finding it less crowded and more laid-back. Either way, it’s cruise day!
The simple answer is your passport and cruise boarding pass. Officially, if you’ve booked a closed-loop cruise (one that starts and ends in the U.S.), a passport isn’t required. You can use an official birth certificate with a raised seal instead.
However, it’s always best to cruise with a passport book. In case of a medical or family emergency during your trip, having a passport will likely be necessary if you need to travel home separately from the ship. Be prepared—a passport is an investment, but it’s absolutely worth it!
